Currently the biggest airline in Europe in terms of both passenger numbers and fleet size, Lufthansa offers an easy-to-use website, cheap deals and a good air miles reward scheme. The website is simple and doesn’t have pop-up adverts that distract from making a booking, while it also gives the option to add a rental car and even a hotel to your purchase.

What attracts me to the Lufthansa website is the ‘Bid for an Upgrade’ section. Here you can easily make an offer on a booking you’ve already made to upgrade to Premium Economy, Business or First Class and, with a bit of luck, you’ll receive an improved seat at your desired price. Lufthansa will then notify you via email 24 hours after your bid to let you know if you’ve been successful or not. This is a great way to get a deal on superior seats without having to pay an excessive amount, and can be especially good if you are flying long distances.

Not only does the website contain detailed of information on check-in, getting to and from the airport, and baggage restrictions under their ‘Prepare’ section, they also have their very own Seat Maps on all their aircrafts, be it a long or short haul flight.

I’m a big fan of their ‘Best price search’ which shows the lowest price flights for the upcoming months. This is particularly convenient if you are planning a journey, but do not have any set date of when you will go. Email notifications alerting you of the best deals and a free mobile app also help with this process. Although their flights are not the cheapest on the market, the ease with which you can navigate the Lufthansa website puts it high up on the list of places to book travel.

Pros
  • No pop-up adverts to distract from making a booking
  • Option to reserve a rental car and hotel
  • ‘Bid for an Upgrade’ makes premium flying a cheaper experience
Cons
  • No option of bundle trips (flight, hotel, rental car hire)
  • Some journeys much more expensive than other airlines
